The history of Nayarit, like that of all America, includes a rich pre-Columbian period. This Mexican state had indigenous inhabitants since millennia. After the Spanish conquest, the entire area underwent profound historical changes.
The scholars of history have established five very well defined stages in the historical development of this area.

These stages are: the Pre-Hispanic era, the Viceroyalty phase, the Independence phase, the Jalisco Canton, the Military District period and the Free and Independent State era.
The Pre-Hispanic era
This is perhaps one of the richest periods in this area, since it borders on prehistory itself.
The first records of inhabitants in the area date back to the time when some tribes came to America via the Bering Strait.
There are peroglyphs in Nayarit that record settlements in that era. Furthermore, the pre-Columbian phase itself has been divided into three stages which are: Los Concheros, the Tombs of Tire Tradition and the Aztatlán Tradition.
The Concheros period takes its name from the practices of the human settlements that were on the coast and that were dedicated to the collection of seashells.
The organizational character of these first groups was essentially tribal and it evolved in successive stages. Finally, the third period - the Aztatlán tradition - occurs until the arrival of the Spanish.
It is assumed that at that time the model of socio-political organization was feudal.
Additionally, cultural development reached a degree of exquisite refinement. Beautiful ceramic, obsidian and polished stone contraptions found are from that period.
The viceregal era
The conquest of Nayarit was carried out by Francisco Cortés de San Buenaventura.
In the year 1532 Nueva Galicia de Compostela was founded, which encompassed the current states of Durango, Colima, Jalisco, Sinaloa, Potosí, Aguascalientes, San Luis and Nayarit.
In 1744 the first port in Nayarit was founded. Through it the routes that even reached the Far East began.
From Independence to the canton of Jalisco
The attacks of the independence phenomenon reached Nayarit in the year 1810 and in 1824 independence was consummated.
After her, the Free and Sovereign State of Jalisco was born. From the same, Nayarit was known as the Seventh Canton of Jalisco.
From this period, the events of defense of the Mexican territory against the North American invasion are famous.
From the military district to the Free and Independent State
Just in the year 1867, President Benito Juárez converted the Seventh Canton of Jalisco into the Military District of Tepic.
This went through various instances of a political order. In 1884, President Manuel González separated the Tepic Military District from the State of Jalisco. From then on, it had the rank of Federal Territory.

As part of this historical development, the area soon entered modernity. Finally in 1917 the area was admitted to the United Mexican States as the state of Nayarit. Its constitution as a Free and Associated State was promulgated in 1918.
