Dry and semi-dry climate
This climate is present in 73% of the region. It is characterized by a great oscillation in temperatures throughout the year, and by the appearance of two very different seasons: the dry season and the wet season.
Dry season
The dry season lasts for most of the year, between the months of October and May. In these months rainfall is very scarce, being a dry season with some sporadic rains.
The temperature during this time is considerably lower than in the wet season, especially at night.
Although the days are usually very sunny with temperatures close to 20 ºC, at night frosts can occur.
On the other hand, since the region is surrounded by mountains, the winds coming from them make the thermal sensation even less.
Wet season
The wet season occurs between May and October. During this time most of the region's rains occur. It is a matter of heavy intensity rainfall and does not usually last long.
Temperatures are somewhat higher during the wet season, and can reach 30ºC during the day. At night it is rare to feel temperatures below 10 ºC.
Other climates
27% of the region has a different climate than dry or semi-dry. Three different climates can be found in the state of Zacatecas: sub-humid temperate climate, very dry climate, and sub-humid warm climate.
Subhumid temperate climate
This climate occurs mainly in the western part of the state. It is characterized by a more constant temperature, staying around 20ºC all year round.
Rainfall is much more abundant, ranging between 2000 and 4000 mm per year.
Very dry climate
The very dry climate appears in the north and northwest of Zacatecas. It is especially characterized by the lack of rainfall, which is usually around 300 mm per year.
Average temperatures are around 20ºC, although in extreme cases they can rise to around 30ºC.
Subhumid warm climate
The last climate of the region occurs in a small part to the south of the state. The temperature is somewhat higher than in other areas: the annual average is close to 25 ºC.
In terms of rainfall, they are more abundant than in most of Zacatecas, ranging between 1000 and 2000 mm per year.
