The agriculture Colombia Caribbean region is characterized by cultivation products such as bananas, cotton, corn and rice.
The cultivation of other agricultural lines such as banana, sorghum, coffee, cocoa, cassava, African palm and fruits is also very important in its economy.
Despite having lost preponderance in the regional economy in recent decades, the agricultural sector continues to be part of its economic base, along with the livestock, mining, industrial, tourism and maritime transport sectors.
This region has very fertile soils of high variability, especially in the eastern zone and in the Sinú and Alto San Jorge valleys.
Wide territories are dedicated to agriculture in the departments of Atlántico, Córdoba, César, Magdalena, Sucre, Bolívar, La Guajira, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and Urabá Antioqueño.
Main Agricultural Items in the Caribbean Region
Banana
The cultivation of bananas and the banana industry have an important history in this region of Colombia, since the days of the United Fruit Company.
This export product is grown in Urabá Antioqueño and in the departments of La Guajira and Magdalena. It occupies a cultivated area of 48,325 hectares.
Cotton
Cotton has been grown in this region since colonial times. It is sown once a year, between the months of August and October.
Its harvest ends in March of the following year and is produced in the departments of Atlántico, Bolívar, Córdoba, Cesar, La Guajira, Sucre and Magdalena.
Banana
This important item is grown mainly in Magdalena and Urabá in Antioquia.
The region has a high consumption of this product, which is part of the daily diet of the population and is combined with almost all dishes.
Corn
The departments of Córdoba and Magdalena are among the largest corn producers in Colombia.
This crop is part of the daily diet of the Colombian, since time immemorial.
Rice
Rice cultivation is very important in Colombia, due to its high consumption.
In the Caribbean region this product is one of the most cultivated, especially in the departments of Cesar and Magdalena.
African palm
The cultivation of the African palm has spread to the departments of Cesar and Magdalena, which are among the largest producers in the country.
Palm oil for multiple uses in the food industry is extracted from this plant.
Sugar cane
The department of Bolívar is an important producer of this export item, which is processed in its sugar mills.
Coffee
Although the Caribbean region does not figure among the large producers of Colombian coffee, however, its cultivation extends through the departments of Cesar, Magdalena, La Guajira and Bolívar.
Yucca
The cultivation and consumption of cassava is widespread in this region and is part of the daily diet of the population.
Other agricultural items grown in the region are: beans, sorghum, chili peppers, squash, aubergine, onion, melon, pepper, cucumber, watermelon, millet, tomato, pumpkin and yam.
