The rivers of San Luis Potosí are few since the state is located in a geographic location with a dry climate. Like most of central Mexico, the state is located on a high, desert plane called the Mesa del Centro.
Although the Mesa del Centro has temperate temperatures due to its high elevation, the low rainfall rate means that surface water bodies are relatively infrequent and small compared to more rainy places.
Most of the rivers in San Luis Potosí are in the south and southeast of the state. The most important rivers in the district are the following:
-Pánuco
-Moctezuma
-Santa Maria
-Valleys
-Green
-Henns
-Big
-Sabinal
-The cats
-The Batteries
-El Tule
-The Coy
-The Shipyard

Rivers of the southeast
The rivers of the southeast are tributaries of the great Pánuco River, which is one of the most important in the entire country and ends in the Gulf of Mexico.
The Moctezuma River is the largest in the region and forms a large part of the border between San Luis Potosí and Veracruz. This also divides San Luis Potosí from the state of Hidalgo to a lesser degree.
The Coy is a tributary of the Moctezuma within the Potosí territory. The Moctezuma is so large that it sometimes floods nearby towns if heavy rains fall.
Southern rivers
The hydrographic map of the southern portion of the state is defined by the Santa María River, another immense river that is a tributary of the Pánuco.
This river is also part of the natural border between San Luis Potosí and other states. The Santa María River defines most of the border with Querétaro and a third portion of its division with Guanajuato.
Notable tributaries of the river are the Tampaón, the San Ysidro and the Los Gatos River. The largest tributary of the Santa María is the Verde River, which runs through a long stretch in the south of the state. The cities of Río Verde and Ciudad Fernández are located next to the Río Verde.
Rivers of the center and north
The center and north of the state have a more dispersed geography in terms of rivers. The rivers in these regions are reduced in size compared to the Moctezuma, the Santa María and the Verde River.
Among the most notable rivers are El Tule, Las Pilas, Matanzas and the river El Astillero. These rivers are important for the agricultural production of the region.
Although there are few rivers in San Luis Potosí, tourists and residents enjoy them.
Major rivers like the Moctezuma and Santa María are regionally known for their impressive waterfalls and labyrinthine tributaries. The rivers will undoubtedly continue to attract more tourists to the state.
