The main tourist sites in Arauca, in Colombia, are the Sierra Nevada del Cocuy, the José Antonio Paez International Bridge, the Las Toninas Aquapark and the Simón Bolívar Park.

The tourist places of this department include natural and artificial spaces. Although it does not enjoy a coastline like the northern departments of the country, the territory is surrounded by quite large rivers. Therefore, Arauca is full of nature.

1- José Antonio Páez International Bridge

The José Antonio Páez Bridge has linked the countries of Venezuela and Colombia since 1960. It was built by both governments in 1967 to transport products, mainly oil.

The bridge crosses the Arauca River, which is part of the border between Colombia and Venezuela, and gives its name to both the department and the capital city of said department.

Despite its commercial principles, the bridge has turned out to be one of the most distinctive tourist spots in the region. From the bridge you can see the surrounding landscapes.

Geographically, the department of Arauca is a territory made up of many plains. The bridge is one of the highest points in the city.

By climbing this bridge, the tourist can take advantage of the panoramic view that the region offers. The view of the Arauca River can also be enjoyed from above.

2- Sierra Nevada del Cocuy

Arauca is within the plains region of Colombia, but it does not mean that there are no mountains. The Sierra Nevada del Cocuy is one of the largest mountain ranges in South America.

This passes through the Colombian departments of Boyacá, Casanare and Arauca. Despite being within three territories, the majority of the park is within Arauca.

The Sierra Nevada is more than 30 kilometers long. As the name suggests, 23 mountains in the sierra are covered in snow. Many consider the sierra as the most impressive Colombian national park.

The mountain ranges are distinguished by large amounts of waterfalls, streams, lakes, and stony trails. In this space you can see the bears, condors and deer that inhabit the mountains.

3- Las Toninas Aquapark

The aquapark is a work designed for public recreation in the region. In the park there are several swimming pools.

There is a pool with waves, one for sports swimming and water slides of all kinds.

The name of the park comes from the species of dolphin that inhabit the large rivers of South America.

This park is so popular that it is known in parts of Venezuela that border the department of Arauca.

4- Simón Bolívar Park

The city of Tame, located within the department of Arauca, is known as the “cradle of freedom” of Colombia.

In the second decade of the 19th century, this place was where Simón Bolívar recruited the soldiers who participated in the war for the independence of the region.

This event is recognized in the capital city of Arauca with the Simón Bolívar Park. Apart from quiet paths and lush trees, the park has monuments that honor these historical events.
