Lee Joon Gi (Busan, South Korea - April 17, 1982) is a South Korean actor, singer and model who rose to fame thanks to his participation in the 2005 film The King and the Clown. It is estimated that Joon Gi manifested his intentions to be an actor after seeing a classmate in the play Hamlet during high school.
So later he moved from his hometown, Busan, to the capital to be part of the entertainment industry. Following his rise to fame through the role he played in The King and the Clown, the actor was also part of a number of popular Korean films and dramas.
Currently, he not only has an important career in the world of acting, but is also recognized as a talented musical performer, which has allowed him to become one of the most popular figures in Asia and the world.
Biography
Lee Joon Gi was born on April 17, 1982 in Busan, South Korea, into a small family. It is estimated that his childhood was quiet and that he developed a particular taste for sports and technology.
He later became interested in acting by watching a classmate from his high school perform in Shakespeare's play, Hamlet.
After several unsuccessful attempts to enter university, Lee moved to the capital with the intention of making his way into the world of entertainment. In fact, it was in 2001 that she began her modeling career for the So Basic campaign.
She continued with modeling work, while at the same time she continued to audition for different types of productions. Eventually, she was featured in the Japanese film The Hotel Venus, in the two-part mini-drama Star's echo, and in the 2004 South Korean production Flying Boys.
Despite the moderate success of The Hotel Venus, Lee found himself in need of other part-time jobs in order to support himself.
Rise to fame and other important events
At this point, an important series of events that marked the rise to fame of this actor can be pointed out:
-For the first time he got an important role in the famous historical film The King and the Clown, where he played the jester Gong Gil. The story focuses on the relationship of two male actors during the Joseon era.
-Although Lee was almost immediately considered an icon in South Korean pop culture, he wanted to get rid of the image projected on film, so he concentrated on obtaining different and varied roles.
-Thanks to Lee's acting skills, his name was quickly made known, and even more so after participating in the Korean drama My girl. This helped it become a star for the rest of the Asian continent.
-In 2007 she starred in the Korean-Japanese film Virgin snow, along with the Japanese actress Aoi Miyazaki. In the same year, she also participated in the May 18 production, whose story is based on the events that occurred during the Gwangju Massacre in 1980.
-Between 2008 and 2009 a dispute was filed with what was his previous agency, Mentor Entertainment, for alleged breach of contract. Later the misunderstandings were left behind, which allowed the resolution of the conflict.
-During that same time he focused on his musical career, organizing a series of concerts in Korea, China and Japan. He was also appointed as an ambassador by the Korea Tourism Organization.
-By 2010 Lee enlisted in the army to fulfill his mandatory military service. Because of this he had to turn down the starring role for the drama Faith, as well as his role as a charity ambassador for the Shanghai Expo.
-During the service, he performed a musical with actor Ju Jin Hoo, in honor of the 60th anniversary of the Korean War.
-In 2012 Lee ended his service. That same day, a fan meeting was arranged at the Sangmyung Art Center in Seoul.
-In May of the same year, he starred in the horror and fantasy drama Arang and the magistrate, which was the first project after his military service. The production was a success in Korea and Japan. Thanks to his performance, he was awarded the Best Korean Lead Actor award.
-He starred in the drama Gunman in Joseon in 2014, as well as the vampire series Scholar who walks the night in 2015. That same year he was also part of the cast of what would be his first Chinese film, Never said goodbye.
-In January 2016, she played the lead role in Moon lovers: scarlet heart Ryeo, a Korean adaptation of the Chinese television series Scarlet heart. Despite not being well received in Korea, the production helped increase its popularity in China.
-He entered the Hollywood industry by being part of the film Resident Evil: the final chapter, which was released in 2017.
-He also formed the main cast of the series Criminal minds, based on the homonymous American series.
-In February 2018 it was announced that he would play the leading role in the series Lawless lawyer, where Lee would be Bong Sang Pil, a former gangster who works as a lawyer, who really seeks to avenge the death of his mother.
