The traditions and customs of Guayaquil have historical roots. These traditions include the festivities for the foundation of Guayaquil, which is celebrated on July 25; and the independence day of the city, commemorated on October 9.
During these days there are parades, gastronomic fairs, traditional music concerts, dances and other artistic presentations.
Another traditional element of the city is gastronomy. This stands out for the use of fish, shellfish and green and ripe bananas, which are typical of the coastal areas.
Other Guayaquil customs include serenades and rodeos. The latter are held within the framework of other major celebrations. For example, they can be carried out on independence day.
The 5 main customs of Guayaquil
1- Gastronomy
Guayaquil's gastronomy is one of the most outstanding in Ecuador. Many of these dishes are typical of the coastal area of the country.
This is the case of ceviche, a dish that is prepared with seafood, squid, pieces of fish and other seafood.
These are marinated in vinegar, lemon juice, and orange juice, whose acids contribute to the cooking of the meat.
Another traditional Guayaquil dish is encocado. This is a stew that is made with coconut milk, chicken, fish, and shrimp. It is served with rice and fried plantains, called patacones.
2- October parties
In October, celebrations are held in Guayaquil to commemorate the month in which this city declared its independence. During this period military parades, festivals and dances are held, among other manifestations.
In October 1820 the inhabitants of Guayaquil, inspired by the pre-independence movements, decided to rebel against the Spanish yoke.
On October 1 of this year the conspirators met and vowed to get rid of the Spanish rulers.
Finally, on October 9, 1820, the city declared itself free from the Crown and thus began the war for independence.
In October, the day of the race is also celebrated, the date on which the first contact between the aborigines and the Spanish is remembered.
3- Serenades
The serenades are a kind of private concert that couples perform with each other. Serenateros are trios, quartets, or groups of musicians who perform love songs. The group usually includes several guitarists and a singer.
It may be the case that the person who dedicates the song is a musician. So instead of hiring a group, he or she performs the serenade.
4- Guayaquil Foundation
On July 25 of each year the founding of Guayaquil is celebrated. During this month parades are held in different parts of the city.
There are also gastronomic exhibitions, art exhibitions and festivals with dances and concerts.
5- Rodeos
Rodeo are festivals in which men and women participate. The men demonstrate their skills in various activities, such as horseback riding, fighting bulls, taming foals, among others.
On the other hand, women compete for the titles of the most beautiful young woman and the most skilled chef.
