The 5 main economic activities of Hidalgo
1- Trade
Commerce is the sector that contributes the most resources to the Hidalgo economy. It is concentrated in seven supply centers, 60 markets and more than 200 tianguis or non-permanent markets.
Most of the trade is based on the sale of food products at the retail level, which includes butchers, chicken shops and groceries. Clothing and footwear stores, pharmacies, haberdasheries and others also stand out.
The food wholesale trade is concentrated in the main cities of the state and is dedicated to the storage and distribution of fruits, eggs, beverages, marine products and others.
The main export products are vehicles and metal-mechanic finishes, cotton and clothing, rubber and its derivatives, and machinery and mechanical devices.
2- Agriculture and livestock
The state of Hidalgo is an important producer of agricultural items such as corn, barley, alfalfa, beans and forage oats.
It also produces cherry coffee and forage to feed sheep. For the year 2013 the planted area was 576,907 hectares.
Like agriculture, livestock also provides the regional manufacturing industry with important support.
Hidalgo is the second national producer of sheep meat, with a production of more than 7000 tons of carcass meat.
3- Manufacturing industry
It is considered the most important sector of the Hidalgo economy due to its contribution to state GDP, with a total value of its annual exports of more than 1719 million dollars (INEGI, 2014).
The textile and clothing areas are among the most prominent, with important industrial parks installed.
These parks are located in Tizayuca, Tepeji del Río de Ocampo, Tepeapulco, Tlaxcoapan, Pachuca de Soto, Tlanalapa, Zapotlán, Mineral de la Reforma, Progreso de Obregón, Tulancingo de Bravo, Actopan and Cuautepec de Hinojosa.
4- Agroindustry
In Hidalgo there are 3,518 industrial establishments dedicated to the processing and transformation of agricultural and livestock products in the municipalities of Pachuca, Actopan, Ixmiquilpan and Tula.
These companies produce packaged foods such as coffee, soft drinks, honey, malt, jams, sauces, food additives and bakery products, sausages, snacks, dairy products and their derivatives.
5- Construction
The construction industry relies on the exploitation of non-metallic minerals, such as limestone, for the production of cement, gravel and sand.
There are some 150 construction companies, between small, medium and large, dedicated to the execution of public and private works.
The four cement companies that are based in the state are Cruz Azul, Cementos Mexicanos, Apasco and Portland Blanco de México.
