The impact that the competency approach has on the educational process is that it makes it possible to link what has been learned in the classroom with real life. It arises from the 20th century, based on the study of linguistic competence by the philosopher and linguist Noam Chomsky.
This approach attempts to relate theory to practice. Knowledge is perceived by the student as useful tools for problem solving.
Teachers and students who understand the educational process as reciprocity
The most relevant aspect of the competency approach in the educational context is that the teacher is no longer only the absolute owner of the knowledge and the simple recipient students, but both construct the contents in the classroom.
Competency education allows for higher quality educational content, teamwork and greater flexibility in the classroom.
The 5 effects of the educational model focused on competencies
1- Focus on the requirements of the labor market
The knowledge acquired in the classroom is taught and shared in such a way that when the student graduates and wishes to enter the workplace, what they learned in the classroom allows them to function without problems.
At the end of the eighties the educational authorities of many countries noticed that higher education was far from the requirements of the labor market.
The companies were looking for graduates with work profiles who were autonomous and with a great predisposition for solving problems, added to conditions for leadership.
2- Seeks to enhance the capacities of the students
Students learn to transform, solve and give new meaning to the knowledge learned in the classroom.
In addition, the context in which the students develop is taken into account, so the contents acquire a unique reality.
3- Students acquire autonomy
Classes taught in the classroom are not limited to simply opening a book to a page determined by the teacher or listening to an endless monologue from the teacher.
Students question, reflect, seek additional information and develop their own learning skills.
4- Knowledge is sought in the real environment
Students acquire knowledge by understanding the real context that surrounds them, and in this way the pleasure of discovery is produced.
They learn to coexist, which means to feed back with the knowledge of others to achieve better results.
5- Practice of teaching with greater autonomy
The role of the teacher in the educational process by competence acquires another dimension. It does not simply impart pre-established knowledge, now you can research and propose new content for the enrichment of learning in the classroom.
He becomes an inspiration, someone who motivates, who involves students in the learning process.
In order to obtain positive results, the competency approach in the educational process needs not only teachers with initiative and students with autonomy, but also educational establishments willing to assume this commitment.
