- The Miranda state after the Independence of Venezuela
The h istory of Miranda state is closely related to the history of Caracas, as originally formed part of the Province of Venezuela (also called Province Caracas).
Consequently, its history includes numerous changes in its territorial organization and political structure. The Miranda state was the scene of great wars between the natives and the Spaniards, since the indigenous people refused to accept the dominion of the Spanish Crown and decided to fight for their territory and for their freedom.
The Caciques Guaicaipuro and Yare were the ones who showed opposition to the Spanish giving their lives fighting for the freedom of their people.
Colonial history of the Miranda State
Once Diego de Losada defeated Cacique Guaicaipuro, he was able to take possession of the lands inhabited by the Teques and Caracas indigenous tribes.
The city of Caracas was founded in this region and soon afterwards towns and cities were founded in the surrounding areas.
Thus, the so-called Province of Venezuela (Province of Caracas) was formed, which was made up of the Falcón, Lara, Yaracuy, Portuguesa, Guárico, Cojedes, Aragua, Vargas, Capital District and Miranda states.
San Diego de los Altos, a territory that is part of the Altos Mirandinos, was the next city founded in the Province of Venezuela.
Foundation of the city of Los Teques
As this region represented an important point for the Province of Venezuela, with the passing of time its inhabitants created various hamlets that would later become cities.
This is how, since 1772, a hamlet located in what is now known as Los Teques began to expand.
This caused a consequence; On October 21, 1777, the City of Los Teques was founded by Bishop Mariano Martí.
Massacre during the War of Independence
The Miranda state was not alien to the independence struggles, and was the scene of one of the largest massacres in the history of Venezuela.
The Ocumare del Tuy Massacre was directed by Francisco Rosete and took place from February 11 to 13, 1814.
During those days they murdered the unarmed inhabitants of Ocumare del Tuy, who had taken refuge both in the mountains and in the Church.
