The name by which it is known internationally comes from Sir George Everest. The first person to locate the exact position of the peak was Sir Andrew Waugh.
Waugh decided to name the mountain with the surname of the cartographer who started the first expeditions.
Peaks surrounding Mount Everest
The arid ridges of the southeast, northeast and west of the Himalayas culminate in the summit of Everest.
A short distance away is the South Summit, a small bulge in the Southeast Cordillera with an elevation of 8,748 meters.
Everest can be seen directly from its northeast side, where it rises some 3,600 meters above the Tibetan Plateau.
Changtse Peak (7560 meters) rises to the north. Khumbutse (6665 meters), Nuptse (7861 meters) and Lhotse (8516 meters) surround the base of Everest to the west and south.

It is also accessible by a short drive from Lhasa, on the Tibetan / Chinese side.
History of the location of Mount Everest
In 1802 the British government decided to start a topographic project to locate the height of the mountain peaks of India.
They used giant theodolites that required twelve men to move them. His goal was to be as accurate as possible.
When they wanted to measure Mount Everest, they were met with the refusal of the Nepalese government to let them work on its territory.
This, added to the difficult rainy climate and malaria, delayed the project. Finally, in 1856 the surveyor Sir Andrew Waugh managed to locate and measure the highest peak in the world.
Dispute about the height of Everest
There was a dispute between China and Nepal about the height of Mount Everest. It ran from 2005 to 2010.
Nepal said the mount was 8,848 meters and China claimed it was only 8,844 meters. The difference was that China measured only the last rock and Nepal included the pile of snow that covered it.
Finally, in 2010 it was agreed between both countries that the official height is 8848 meters. And Nepal recognizes the height of the rock at 8844 meters.
