The social components of Guerrero are a series of factors and data that allow to know the characteristics and attributes of the population, its development as a society and the relationship with other entities in Mexico. The most important are demographics, economy, and ethnic groups.

The economy is an element that conditions several other social components, such as social inequality, poverty and even culture.

Guerrero is a state that presents great contrasts, being an important tourist destination with some of the best and most popular beaches in the world, but being one of the poorest entities in the country.

The State of Guerrero and its social components

From various points of view, Guerrero is considered a lagging state. Its economy, unemployment rate and percentage of poverty show numbers that are far from the average for the country and not very suitable for an area with so many natural resources to exploit.

The high number of indigenous inhabitants has a significant impact not only on unemployment rates, but also on illiteracy rates. Guerrero has an illiteracy rate of almost 30%.

Demography

The almost 3 and a half million inhabitants of Guerrero place it number 12 among the most populated states in Mexico. Its population density is 50 inhabitants per square kilometer.

Regarding the distribution by gender, 52% of Guerrerenses are women, while the growth rate of the total population is less than 2%.

Guerrero is one of the states with the highest emigration rate in Mexico. Some 80,000 inhabitants decide to emigrate each year to the United States, mainly due to the enormous unemployment and scarce job opportunities.

Economy

The main activity of Guerrero is tourism. The exuberance and coastal beauty of Acapulco's beaches attracts more than 9 million tourists each year, making it the third most visited destination in Mexico, only behind Cancun and the Riviera Maya.

Two other activities complete the economic front of the state; agriculture and livestock.

15% of the territory of Guerrero is used for agricultural crops. The main products harvested are corn, sesame, coffee and avocado.

Poverty

Despite having one of the most sought-after and popular tourist destinations in Mexico, Guerrero is characterized by being a state with great poverty and enormous social inequality.

Up to 2 million people are under the poverty line in Guerrero, which represents 60% of the population, including 800,000 inhabitants in extreme poverty.

Guerrero is the third poorest state in Mexico only behind Chiapas and Oaxaca.

Indigenous population

More than half a million people in Guerrero belong to an indigenous ethnic group, which represents 18% of the population.

Most of the indigenous groups are located in the poorest areas of the state, which further increases social inequality and poor living conditions.

The ethnic groups are divided into 4 groups; Náhuatl, Mixteco, Tlapaneco and Amuzgo, being the Náhuatl the most numerous with 40% of the total indigenous inhabitants.
