The flag of Hidalgo, a Mexican state, has two unofficial versions. The first is the most used in government ceremonies and consists of a flag with a white background, on which the state coat of arms is seated.
The second version contains the same coat of arms but on a red field, right in the center, and whose design corresponds to the deputy Carolina Viggiano Austria.
The state of Hidalgo does not yet have an official flag. Its only official symbols used by the state government are the anthem and the shield.

History of flags
Between 1922 and 1998, the state of Hidalgo used in its official acts a blue flag on which the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe was placed.
This flag was the emblem of the emancipatory movement of New Spain, headed by priest Miguel Hidalgo. This emblem was used during the cry of Dolores on September 16, 1810.
In 2002 the first proposal to create the official flag of the Free and Sovereign State of Hidalgo arose and was made by Manuel Rodríguez Villegas.
It was a blue pavilion with the shield of the state in the center, which was painted by Diego de Rivera, and contains on the left side the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
The proposal was raised to the consideration of the then governor, Manuel Ángel Núñez Soto, but it was rejected.
It was considered inappropriate for a secular state like Hidalgo to have religious symbols, even though these symbols were within the state's coat of arms.
During his term in office, Governor Núñez Soto (1999 - 2005) used a red flag with the word Hidalgo as a legend, but it was not official either, rather it was used as a propaganda emblem of his government.
Subsequently, the successive governments of Hidalgo have been using the white flag with the state shield in the center in public activities.
Red background banner
In 2015, Deputy Carolina Viggiano Austria, from the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), adopted a red flag with the state shield in the center for private use in her office.
Since then, this flag has also been incorporated into the flags used in the state of Hidalgo in official ceremonies, but without being of an official nature.
Description and meaning
The flag of Hidalgo is a white flag, whose meaning is linked to its history and economic vocation.
It has the state shield, which consists of two horizontal fields, and two crossed flags appear as external ornaments.
On the left side is the blue flag that contains the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe highlighted in gold.
This blue flag symbolizes the independence struggle, led by Father Hidalgo and the insurgent movement.
On the right side appears the national flag, symbol of the Mexican federation.
The shield has two horizontal fields. The mountain of sinople is located in the center and represents the mountains of the state.
The bronze bell that hangs on a tree is the symbol of the cry of Dolores that proclaimed the independence of Mexico.
The Phrygian cap of gules (red) is a Mason symbol. Together with the laurel branches, it signifies the victory and freedom achieved in 1821.
The war box in the lower field symbolizes the three moments lived by the country: independence, reform and revolution.
For their part, the three holes in the field symbolize mining as the main economic activity of the state.
