The Yaquis' clothing today is very similar to that of any other peasant in the region: cotton T-shirt, underpants, denim pants, and shoes.
Denim jackets or jackets are common in desert areas and sometimes use palm hats, adorned with feathers or a red ribbon.
The shoes can vary: they could either be traditional with a rubber sole and leather constitution, they could be sporty or they could be the huaraches or Mexican sandals, which are the most traditional.
In reality, the Yaquis do not have a defined typical regional costume, but the most significant would be those worn by Yaqui women.
The common clothing of a Yaqui woman includes loose blouses and skirts, made with plain fabrics and with very bright colors. They wear lace and the collars are adorned with colored ribbons.
The outfits are complemented by accessories such as rings and necklaces. Although the use of huaraches is still common throughout the territory, commercial shoes are the preferred today.
Typical costumes for the holidays
In the case of women, it consists of a skirt embroidered with multicolored flowers and a similar blouse.
Currently the fabrics can be synthetic and adorned with white lace ribbons. In terms of accessories, they are similar to those used on a daily basis.
For the parties, the dancing men are bare-chested, but they can also use blankets or cloaks to cover the upper and lower body.
They wear light colored pants, revealing the ténabaris with which they wrap their legs.
These ténabaris are pieces made of butterfly cocoons or dried bells, which are linked together, turning the piece into a large rattle. The intention of this piece is that it generates a sound with each step of the wearer.
With the intention of generating sound, men also use special belts, made of a strip of leather between 8 and 15 cm wide, from which bells or deer hooves hang that generate sounds while the man moves.
Both the belts and the tenabaris are for exclusive use for rituals, dances and celebrations; They are not for everyday use.
Huaraches are a very characteristic type of sandal in Mexico and are used by men, women and children alike.
They are traditionally made of cotton or bovine leather, and are considered the product of the cultural mix typical of the colonial era.
Currently they are made of several thin intertwined leather straps, but their use has been relegated mainly to peasants. They can also be synthetic, made of rubber or rubber.
