The Luvironza River is a river considered the southernmost tributary of the Nile River. It is located on Mount Kikizi in Burundi, Africa.
This river flows north along with the Rurubu River, joining with three other major rivers in Rwanda to form the Kagera River, which forms the natural border between Tanzania and Rwanda and later between Tanzania and Uganda, flowing into the largest body of water that feeds the River Nile, Lake Victoria.
It is located on Mount Kikizi, between the cities of Rutana and Kinyinya, very close to the Province of Gitega. Travel 110 km north to join the Rurubu River.
It emanates from an altitude of 1,416 meters high in the form of a stream. It is not home to fauna and the flora that covers its shores is typical of the mountains of East Africa.
It is not far from a large number of rural communities in extreme poverty, from the towns of Migezi, Rusange, Burembera, Rushanga, Rugaju, Makera and Gabuke.
characteristics
Very little information is available about the Luvironza River. It is known that it was discovered and identified by Burkhart Waldecker as the birthplace of the Nile River in 1937.
Today it serves as the engine for the Rushanga Hydroelectric Power Station and as a source of pre-treated water for beer production at the Gitega Brewery.
Its main characteristics are:
- It is a stream of clay water.
- It is the southernmost tributary of the Nile River, so it is presumed that it could be its source.
- Due to the alluvium in its waters, it is not drinkable.
- It stretches for 110 km of route to join with the Rurubu River and later with the Kagera River, finally ending in Lake Victoria.
- It emanates from an altitude of 1,406 meters above sea level, on Mount Kikizi.
- Its waters are used for industrial or other purposes.
