The 5 main traditional sweets of Chiapas
1- Nuégados
It is one of the most representative sweets in Chiapas. Its preparation is very simple: it consists of preparing a sweet bread based on orange juice and frying it in vegetable oil.
The final touch of this dessert consists of coating the nuégado in honey, and sprinkling it with sugar with red carmine.
It is an iconic dessert of the Zoque culture, descendants of the Olmecs, who currently live in the states of Chiapas and Oaxaca.
2- Coleto bread
It is a sweet native of San Cristóbal de Las Casas. They are breads filled with yellow sweet potato, sprinkled with powdered sugar.
Coleto breads are wood-fired. This dessert is part of the offer of the bakeries of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, along with the braid bread and the cakes.
3- Chimbo
This delicious dish is made from marquesote, a typical Mexican bread with a neutral flavor and very fragile to the touch.
To prepare the chiapaneco chimbo, the marquesote is bathed in sugar syrup and cinnamon.
This sweet is widely popular in Comitán de Domínguez and San Cristóbal de Las Casas. It is usually served in individual servings, and even as popsicles.
4- Jocote or tanned nance
The tanned jocote or nance is extremely common in the popular markets and in the fairs of Chiapas.
As its name indicates, this sweet can be prepared with two varieties of fruits: the jocote, better known as jobo; and the nance, also called nanci, nanchi, nantz or nanche.
In both cases, the fruit must be macerated for a year or more in brandy or pox. The latter is a typical liquor of the region, prepared from corn, cane and wheat.
5- Yolk sweets
They are desserts made from egg yolks with sugar, which results in a dessert with a smooth texture.
This type of candy is usually presented in combinations of various shapes and flavors. In Chiapas outlets, yolk sweets in the shape of flowers and animals predominate.
