The 3 main economic activities of Yucatán
1- Factories
For many years Yucatan has been relegated in terms of the manufacture of products because in Mexico these factories are mainly concentrated on the border with the United States.
The term maquiladoras is used to name the factories of products that are manufactured in a country but not marketed in it. Most are usually foreign capital.
The presence of factories in Yucatán is relatively low compared to other states. Yucatán has about 68 maquiladoras that employ about 20,000 workers.
The investments that exist are mainly in the textile and clothing sector. This is due to the low cost of labor paid by companies in Yucatan.
The main industries are food, beverages and tobacco. They are followed by textiles, clothing and leather products.
In third place are the oil and coal derivatives industries, chemical, plastics and rubber industries.
2- Agriculture and livestock
The agriculture and livestock sector includes the cultivation of fruits, mainly limes and lemons, vegetables and henequen.
They also work with cattle, pigs and fish production, although the latter sector has suffered a notable decline. Yucatán is also an important producer of honey.
In the state there is insufficient coordination between production and marketing; For this reason, jobs have been lost in the agricultural sector.
3- Tourism
Yucatan offers a large number of activities to visitors, which has increased the number of tourists. In the state you can find farms and archaeological sites.
The city of Mérida is a strategic point to visit the Mayan sites of Chichén Itzá, Kabah, Mayapán and Uxmal.
Tourists are interested in Mayan culture and history. These sites have been highly visited thanks to the promotion by the government.
Beach and fishing activities are also offered in Progreso and other coastal cities.
