The population of Durango at the end of 2016 was 1 million 800 thousand people, in this way the state of Durango occupies the 25th position out of 32 among the most populated federal entities in Mexico, despite being the fourth state with 125 thousand square kilometers.
With a population density of just 14 inhabitants per square kilometer, Durango is the second least densely populated state in Mexico, only behind Baja California Sur.
The arid and desert of a large part of its geography is perhaps the most determining factor in its low number of inhabitants.

Data on the population of Durango
In Durango there are 39 municipalities, however, 60% of the population (more than a million people) is concentrated in just 3; Durango, Gómez Palacio and Lerdo. Its most populated city is its capital Victoria de Durango, with 520 thousand inhabitants.
The 40% of the population that does not live in the 3 most inhabited municipalities is divided into about 6,300 small communities, of which 80% have less than 100 people.
Demography
-The growth rate of Durango is very low, just 1.5% per year and 70% of its residents are located in urban areas.
-The migration of people from rural to urban areas represents a real challenge due to the saturation of basic services such as potable water and electricity.
-The percentage of women and men is practically identical (51% of the inhabitants of Durango are women).
-Half of the population is less than or equal to 24 years of age.
-The inhabitants of Durango represent only 1.5% of the total population of Mexico.
Socioeconomic situation
Durango is among the 10 states with the most poverty in Mexico, 50% of its population is below the poverty line and 10% is in extreme poverty.
During 2015 and 2016 there has been a process of accelerated inflation and a decrease of the economy by up to 2.5%.
Although activities such as tourism or mining increased their economic contribution to the country's gross domestic product, livestock, agriculture and fishing decreased.
Taking into account the 32 states that make up Mexico, Durango is in position 26 in terms of contribution to the national economy, with 1.2%.
Despite the data that show that poverty in Durango is far from disappearing, it is one of the states that most attracts tourists for its natural wonders, landscapes suitable for practicing extreme sports and cultural wealth (especially in its historic center).
Ethnic groups
5 ethnic groups can be found in Durango; the Tepehuanes, Náhuatl, Huicholes, Coras and Tarahumaras.
2% of the state's population speaks some indigenous dialect. The indigenous inhabitants are little more than 30 thousand individuals, which represents 1.7% of the total mass of residents in Durango.
Religion
The predominant religion in Durango is Catholicism, with more than a million and a half faithful.
Culture
Culture is one of the great intangible riches of Durango, its historic center has been a national heritage since 1982. It has 700 historical buildings that date back several hundred years.
