Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, later known as "Osho", was born on December 11, 1931 in Kuchwada, India. After graduating from college, he claimed to have found enlightenment.
In 1970 he introduced the practice of "dynamic meditation", became a spiritual teacher, and began to attract a significant following. When his controversial teachings repeatedly put him in conflict with the Indian authorities, Rajneesh and his followers fled to a ranch in Oregon, where they attempted to establish a commune.
Conflicts with the local community caused Rajneesh and members of his group to commit some mistakes to achieve their ends, and in 1985 he was arrested for immigration fraud. After pleading guilty, he was deported to India. He died on January 19, 1990, in Pune, India.
During his life he was seen as a quite controversial mystic, guru and spiritual teacher. In the 1960s he traveled throughout India as a public speaker and was a critic of socialism, Mahatma Gandhi, and Hindu religious orthodoxy.
