The Shield of Mexicali is the image that represents the strength and warmth of an extreme climate. Mexicali is a Mexican city recognized as the city that captured the Sun. It is the capital of the state of Baja California.
In 1968, the municipal president of the V City Council of Mexicali, José María Rodríguez Mérida, made a call announcing a contest to choose the best design that would become the official shield of Mexicali.
The contest was held on April 9, 1968. The winning work was done by Professor Sergio Ocampo Ramírez under the pseudonym "Cucapah 68", who decided to try his luck and showed two designs created in watercolor.
The first design was the winning shield, where he expressed his love for the warm lands and its hard-working people, thus embodying his excellent creativity.
The professor obtained an honorary diploma and 2,000 pesos. The municipal president of Mexicali announced the official shield on April 9, 1968.
On the 45th anniversary of the Mexicali shield, Professor Ocampo Ramírez made an appointment addressed to the new generations:
Meaning
The shield symbolizes cultures, climatic conditions and industrial development, made up of three colors and five historically significant elements in the city of Mexicali.
In the upper part of the shield is an anagram that says (MEXI / CALI) separated by a line that represents the international division between Mexico and California.
The phrase “Tierra Cálida” refers to the warmth of the population and the climatic conditions of the city of Mexicali.
Ocher color
It is the color that covers half of the field representing the desert.
The color blue
This color symbolizes the waters of the Gulf of California.
The colorRed
It is the color that divides the central part of the shield representing the Colorado River.
The mountain
It is located in the center of the ocher colored field, representing El Centinela hill, which was used by natives and exploiters to guide themselves through the desert.
The cotton ball
It is the one that is located in the upper part of the mountain , representing the agricultural product of the Mexicali valley.
The bird
It is the one located next to the cotton ball. It alludes to a bird that is moving through the skies representing the method used by the first settlers when they reached the lands of the city.
Sprocket
It is known as gear and is located within the blue field. Inside it has the symbol of an atom, representing the science and industries of the city.
The red sun
Located in the upper part of the shield , representing the warmth of the climate and the strong temperatures when the Sun is present in the city.
The head of the eagle
It is located in the upper part of the shield within the Sun, symbolizing the origin of the population of Mexicali.
