The shield of Baja California or (Arms of the State of Baja California) is the heraldic symbol that represents the state, which was declared as a free and sovereign territory in 1953, when it did not have an official shield.
In the middle of his term, Governor Braulio Maldonado Sánchez called a contest. The contest was held on February 24, 1956 and was classified as desert, because none of the works presented met the established requirements.
In a new call, the juries took the best four works and asked their authors to create a new shield.
The winning work was presented by Mr. Armando Delbouis. On September 27 of the same year, it was declared the official shield of Baja California.
Meaning
The shield shows in each of its details his faithful respect and love for the country, which characterizes the state of Baja California.
Sun
It is the symbol that represents light as a source of energy, life and heat.
Within this figure you can see a slogan "Labor and Social Justice", which expresses the objective of working in society in a fair way in the Mexican Revolution.
Human figures
On the sides of the head of the shield, two human figures can be seen, representing a man and a woman joining their arms towards the center with rays of light, which symbolizes energy.
The man holds a book in his left hand that symbolizes the intellect. The woman in her right hand holds an energy symbol
The graduated cylinder and the square
This symbolizes chemistry and a square symbolizes engineering. Together the figures express the intellectual work and the union of the sciences to create forces.
Field of sowing
In the center of the shield, on one side you can see a sowing field that represents the symbol of agriculture.
The mountains
On the horizon there are mountains that represent mining resources.
The wheel and the factory
The cogwheel is accompanied by an active factory, which represents the agricultural, mining and industrial work that is used in the state of Baja California.
The desert
At the bottom of the shield you can see a desert, with the Colorado River flowing into the Gulf of California.
From there arises the image of a man representing a missionary friar who characterizes one of the colonizers of the region.
The friar has his arms open as if he were contemplating his work. These symbolize love for the earth and humanity.
The sea that emerges from the sides in the form of two waves intertwining the shield and between them two fish, symbolize two coastal seas and the great economy that they represent.
The colors of the shield
Each color that the shield has has a justification.
Its red skies represent the heat produced by collective struggle and effort, just like the yellow color of the desert.
Work and social justice
It is the motto turned into a legend that is written inside the Sun.
Represents the purposes and regulations of the activities of the Government of the State of Baja California.
