WHAT ARE THE POLITICAL COMPONENTS OF CHIAPAS? - CULTURE VOCABULARY - 2025

The political components of Chiapas are the different powers and governmental institutions in charge of establishing and enforcing the laws that regulate all activities present in the state.

As in almost all political systems in the world, there are 3 main powers; the executive, legislative and judicial.

Together with the political powers, there are several institutions that work hand in hand with the government to carry out certain plans.

These can be of a very diverse nature, such as educational, cultural, citizen, electoral or economic. In the same way, the political-administrative division constitutes an important element for the federal organization.

Main elements of politics in Chiapas

Chiapas was founded in 1786 and is the seventh most populous state in Mexico, with just over 5 million inhabitants, of which half live in rural areas.

It is the region with the greatest ethnic diversity in the country; Up to 12 indigenous groups can be found, totaling almost a million inhabitants (almost 20% of the population).

Governor

The executive position of Chiapas lasts for 6 years and is represented by a governor, whose main functions are decision-making regarding the direction of the state in the economic, educational, cultural and administrative sectors.

The government of Chiapas must work together with the legislative power to enact federal laws and statutes, which fall into the hands of the state congress and its deputies.

Congress

41 deputies make up the State Congress and make up the legislative branch. The term of office is 3 years with the possibility of re-election.

Since the deputies are elected by municipality, they are perhaps the political power that most represents citizens within the government.

His main occupation is the analysis of the socioeconomic situation of the state and the subsequent proposal, discussion and approval of laws to improve life in Chiapas. It is a totally autonomous body.

Power of attorney

The judiciary is divided into 4 institutions; the higher court of justice, the council of the judiciary, the electoral and administrative court of justice, and the court of bureaucratic labor.

These entities have the main function of maintaining peace and imparting justice, especially in cases involving children and adolescents, indigenous populations and social injustice.

Political-administrative division

Chiapas has 124 municipalities, which in turn are distributed among the 9 geographic regions that divide the state.

For a greater administrative organization there are also 15 economic zones, which cooperate with each other in multiple commercial activities.

The state capital, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, is the most inhabited city in Chiapas with almost 600 thousand inhabitants. Currently the population in Chiapas exceeds 5 million people and presents a growth dynamics of 3% per year.

Government institutions

Apart from the powers, an important political component of Chiapas are its public institutions, which provide administrative and logistical support in numerous cultural and educational initiatives in order to promote knowledge and art in the state.

Some institutions such as the State Center for Indigenous Languages, Art and Literature or the Indigenous Center for Integral Training, are in charge of instructing the indigenous population to facilitate their relationship with society.
