Campeche has a population of just under 900,000 inhabitants. That figure represents 0.8% of the total population of Mexico. Thus, Campeche ranks as the third least populated state in the country. It is also the fourth with the lowest population density -with 15.6 inhabitants / square km-.
Regarding the composition by sex and age, Campeche is a state that can be considered young. The average age of its inhabitants is 27 years old - half the population is that age or younger.
Campeche Cathedral
There are more women than men, in a ratio of 96.2 men -49% of the total population- for every 100 women -51% of the total, by sex-.
Demographic characteristics of the inhabitants of Campeche
Next, we will see some of the specific characteristics of the Campeche population.
To begin with, its distribution is not uniform across the state. Furthermore, in each specific area or subregion we find data referring to the ethnic origin and cultural background of its inhabitants.
Where do the people of Campeche live?
The state's population is distributed around two main urban centers: San Francisco de Campeche and Ciudad del Carmen. In the first, 283,000 inhabitants are registered and in the second, 248,000.
These two urban centers are where the state's economic activity is concentrated. Therefore, it attracts inhabitants from other interior rural areas.
Economic activity of the inhabitants of Campeche
Only 51.7% of the total population of Campeche is economically active. This means that almost half of the inhabitants of the state do not carry out any activity that earns them income.
Of these, 48% are dedicated exclusively to tasks related to the home, while 32% are students and less than 10% are retirees, pensioners or the disabled.
These figures vary if urban centers are compared with inland areas. In the latter, as in Calakmul, only 42.3% of the population registers some economic activity.
This is explained by the rural character and subsistence agriculture or fishing as the main occupations.
In Campeche or Carmen, the population works in the service sector: tourism, hospitality, commerce, etc.
Ethnic characteristics
Mexico is a country with important indigenous roots and Campeche, a state with a great Mayan tradition.
Almost 45% of the state's population considers itself indigenous, and 11.5% admit to knowing an indigenous language.
Again, these data are not homogeneous and present geographic variations.
Thus, in urban environments it is more difficult to find people who identify as indigenous: 40% in the San Francisco de Campeche area and 24% in Ciudad del Carmen.
On the contrary, in areas like Hecelchakán, up to 86% say they are indigenous and almost 40% speak an indigenous language.
Schooling and educational level of the population
Another aspect to be analyzed is the proportion of adults who certify that they have completed educational studies in each area of the state.
Again, this proportion is higher around large urban centers and much lower in more rural and indigenous areas.
There is also a correlation between life expectancy in one and the other. Thus, in capitals the population tends to live longer due to easier and faster access to the health system.
In indigenous areas, more population lacks health coverage insurance and is exposed to harsher conditions.
