The population of Aguascalientes is approximately 1,310,000 inhabitants. It is one of the least extensive states in Mexico so, although its population is not very large, it is highly concentrated.
Aguascalientes is the fourth state of Mexico by population density. It has 234 inhabitants per square kilometer compared to the 61 inhabitants per square kilometer on average in the country.
Regarding the distribution of the inhabitants in the state, 81% of them live in urban areas. 19% of the population of Aguascalientes resides in rural areas. The state's population has not stopped growing in recent decades. This especially causes the growth of the main urban nucleus, the municipality of Aguascalientes.

Demographic characteristics
The peculiarities of each state are manifested through the characteristics of its population at various levels.
In the case of Aguascalientes, data on ethnic and linguistic diversity, educational level or economic activity help to classify its inhabitants.
Ethnic and linguistic diversity
Mexico is a country with an indigenous tradition with Mayan roots. In many areas of the country there is still credible evidence of them: archeology, linguistic variety, indigenous physical features, among others.
However, Aguascalientes does not stand out for this diversity. Less than 1% of its population is indigenous and only 0.2% speak an indigenous language.
It is the lowest figure in Mexico, below the national average (6.7%) and at an abysmal distance from, for example, Oaxaca, which has 34.2%.
Regarding the professed faith, 93% of the inhabitants of Aguascalientes claim to be Catholic. In this case, the figure is ten points higher than the national average (83%).
Educational and schooling level
Only 3% of the state's population is illiterate. It is a relatively low figure when compared with the country as a whole, given that the average is 6%.
In addition, the average school level of the inhabitants of Aguascalientes is 9.7 years of education.
That means they stay in school an average of half a year longer than the national average. This indicator is related to the economy of the region.
Industrial activities are very important. In fact, the primary sector barely contributes 4.5% of the gross domestic product.
That means that far fewer people are engaged in agriculture and livestock than in other states in Mexico. These activities are traditionally related to little or no education.
However, in Aguascalientes, industry and services are the economic engine of the state, and these activities require more preparation.
The urban and the rural
In relation to the previous point, the overwhelming majority that live in the city is due to economic and development factors. Only 19% of the inhabitants of Aguascalientes live in rural areas.
In contrast, 81% live in cities where large companies, businesses, universities and job opportunities are located. This makes Aguascalientes a dynamic and urban state.
In recent years this state has received more internal migrations than it exported. That is, people from other parts of Mexico come to live and work in Aguascalientes in a greater proportion than they leave.
