The worksheet is used to collect information, take bibliographic summaries or citations, and order data necessary for scientific or academic research.
These working instruments allow the information obtained to be classified with its respective sources, to later more easily write a monograph, a report or any other publication that requires sufficient methodological rigor to validate its content.
Previously the worksheets consisted of rectangular cards on which you could write on both sides.
Today digital files can be used for storing documentary information; These are archived in databases available in various computer programs.
Features
1- Registration and collection
The worksheet allows the researcher to record and compile the information obtained from documentary sources such as books, magazines, newspapers, reports, among others.
This registration is made in physical or electronic version. It allows you to extract in these files the data that you consider most important and then empty them or use them in the final writing of your academic work.
This instrument avoids the researcher the task of having to consult the same sources over and over again during, for example, the process of writing and producing a book.
If the information is well classified and organized, you will always have the information you need at hand.
2- Organization and classification
The information that is collected during the research process is generally very abundant, and needs to be processed and classified in order to be useful to the researcher.
The way in which the worksheet is designed allows these collected data to be arranged in an orderly manner for later consultation.
3- Facilitates the indication of references
When you are in the process of writing a report, it is advisable to have all the information investigated at hand, to avoid dispersion and loss of time that could harm the knowledge production process.
Then, the file is consulted when it is required to take a piece of information or argue a thesis.
4- Simplify the preparation of the bibliography
This is another of the main functions of the job ticket. For an academic work or any serious research to be valid, it requires its author to review the sources that supported the content exposed in their work.
At the end of the information and data collection stage that will serve to feed the research, it is essential to document the sources from which these data were extracted.
When the sources are arranged alphabetically or by subject, the presentation and final writing work is facilitated.
Currently, not all researchers use the lined cardboard worksheets, but prefer to do it directly on the cards arranged on the computer.
However, the physical files are still very important and convenient, at least for the collection of information from bibliographic sources such as books and magazines.
Elements of a job ticket
A good worksheet should contain the following elements:
- Author
- Title of the book
- Page number or page of the appointment
- Topic
- Publication date
- Other data (editorial, volume, among others)
In the file you can also indicate the date of collection or consultation of the data.
