The types of industrial manufacturing refer to the variety of products obtained from the transformation of raw materials.
They are called primary when they convert raw materials into products that will be used as inputs in other processes.
They are called secondary when they make the final products. In this case they are subdivided into heavy, light and high-tech.
In current times, technology has become the protagonist of industrial processes, aimed at the manufacture of serial products to be sold to consumers.
Under this scheme, industrial production incorporates sub-processes that affect productivity, lowering production costs and managing to meet demand.
The 7 main types of industrial manufacturing
1- Textile industry
It is the oldest and most widespread industry. It works from the processing of raw wool, cotton and linen.
With these materials fabrics are manufactured and clothing, upholstery and bedding are made.
2- Chemical, petroleum and plastics industry
The generality of the economic activities of the modern era requires chemical products; hence the crucial importance of this industry. In turn, this industry is subdivided into three categories:
- Heavy chemicals, which use minerals or by-products.
- Pharmacists, which are medicines.
- Petrochemical products, such as hydrocarbons, oil and their derivatives.
This sector converts chemicals, coal, and crude oil into soaps, resins, paints, drugs, pesticides, plastics, and rubber.
3- High-tech industry: computers, electronics and transportation
It is a form of secondary industry that involves production. In addition, it is regularly combined with other types of manufacturing industries, such as transportation and energy.
This sector includes household appliances, microprocessors, chips, semiconductors and audiovisual equipment.
4- Food processing industry
It is a type of light industry that involves the processing of raw materials, such as wheat, corn or olive, to transform them into flour or oil.
In general, this industry includes all forms of food production. This includes packaging, canning, purification, pasteurization, and homogenization.
5- Metallurgical industry
It is a heavy industry that deals with the refining, manufacturing, and alloying of metals.
In this line, the steel industry stands out due to the high demand for iron and steel as raw materials for other industries.
Metals production includes other prominent industries of aluminum, steel, forging, coating, stamping and engraving manufacturing, casting and refining.
6- Engineering industry
It is a heavy industry that is highly dependent on the production of the metallurgical industry.
Its main products are transportation equipment, such as vehicles, cars, trains and airplanes. Also included are electrical equipment and industrial machinery.
7- Wood, leather and paper
The wood industry includes the manufacture of floors, houses or parts of these, laminate and sawn.
In the matter of leather, with the exception of garments that correspond to the textile industry, it includes all types of tanning and curing.
A separate line from the wood industry is represented by the production of paper. This is characterized by cleaning the pulp of the raw wood to be transformed into paper of different types.
