Temple of San Cayetano de Valenciana
This church is one of the great tourist attractions of Guanajuato. It was built between 1765 and 1788, and is the maximum expression of the Churrigueresque style, a specific manifestation of the Baroque.
This church was built for its owner, the Count of Rul y Valenciana, who also owned the La Valenciana silver mine.
In it you can see a profusion of intricate ornaments that cover all surfaces. Other examples in the city of this type of construction are the churches San Francisco and La Compañía de Jesús.
La Valenciana mine
La Valenciana became one of the most productive silver mines in the world. Currently, it is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Guanajuato.
Although it is no longer in operation, guided tours are conducted by retired miners in which you descend underground to see the narrow passageways and the historic drilling equipment used by the former miners.
Cervantino Festival
The Cervantino International Festival is presented as one of the most significant tourist attractions in Guanajuato.
This has been held every year in October since 1972, offering an ideal setting for all fields of arts and culture.
Thanks to the quality and tradition of the University Theater Group, the festival is one of the most respected international cultural events in the world.
The festival takes its name from Miguel de Cervantes y Saavedra and, among others, one-act plays are performed.
The repertoire has several works from the Golden Age of Spain and, in particular, Don Quixote de la Mancha.
Alhondiga de Granaditas
The construction of this fortress began on January 5, 1798 and ended in 1809. It was built as a public barn after the famine of 1786, although it looks more like a castle.
Its huge and strong walls were built in the shape of a parallelogram. In 1810, this became one of the main battle sites of the War of Independence.
Later, it served as a military barracks and warehouse. During the 19th century, it was the city jail for many decades. Finally, it became a museum in 1949.
Within the large rock walls, this old barn has a spacious courtyard framed by heavy columns of green sandstone.
In addition, the walls of the building's stairways are painted with dramatic murals about the Mexican independence movement.
Union Garden
The Union Garden is the main square of the city, and has several fountains and flower beds.
The majestic Teatro Juárez dominates the square. In addition, it is surrounded by numerous hotels and restaurants.
