The typical traditions of Piura are related to Christian celebrations. This is due to the mixture that arose between Christianity and the beliefs of the natives of the region.
Many customs of this Peruvian state are popular throughout the country. A curious aspect is that much of the idiosyncrasy of the Piurans resembles that of the southern peoples of Ecuador.
This is because before the limits of the country were defined, the peoples of the Piura Andes had close dealings with the peoples of southern Ecuador, with whom they directly adjoin.

The 5 main traditions of Piura
1- Day of the dead
As in many Latin American countries, the Day of the Dead is celebrated on November 1.
It is a date that is used to pay tribute to family and friends who are no longer in this world. This is not a sad celebration.
It begins in the morning with a ritual called "the coronation of the little angels." At nightfall, relatives gather in the cemetery around the graves of their deceased relatives.
They bring the favorite foods of their deceased and play music, to celebrate the lives of their deceased.
2- The captive lord of Ayabaca
In the city of Ayabaca, in the temple of Nuestra Señora del Pilar, there is the sculpture «The Captive Lord».
The celebration takes place every October 13 and brings together thousands of faithful from all over the country. Faith towards the Lord of Ayacaba is widespread in Peru.
Believers make a long walk to the altar, wearing purple and paying debts for accomplished miracles.
3- Anniversary of Piura
On August 15, 1532 Francisco Pizarro founded the city of Piura in homage to San Miguel.
For this reason, every year this date is celebrated as the anniversary of the city of San Miguel de Piura.
The celebration is not limited to that day, but starts about a week before. During the holidays the streets are filled with artistic presentations, such as typical dances and dances, and feasts of traditional food.
4- Our Lady of the Mercedes
These celebrations are a series of events that are distributed throughout the month of September.
It is a national celebration. On September 1, the image of the Virgin is taken from the temple of San Francisco de Asís to be carried in various processions.
Accompanying these processions are novenaries, rosaries and collective prayers of all kinds.
The central festival takes place on September 24, the day on which the Armed Forces pay homage to the Virgin. In addition, a massive mass is held. These are dates of great revelry for the region.
5- Carnivals in Bernal
These celebrations date back to approximately 1920. This indicates that they are not old, but rather recent.
The city of Bernal is located in the lower area of the Piura district, and the carnivals bring together people from all over the country.
They take place during a couple of weeks in February, and are popular for their reputation for being big parties. These celebrations combine music, dance, food and the distinctive Peruvian folklore.
