The adjectival sentences, composed of an adverb and an adjective, fulfill the function of describing someone, something or a particular place. That is, they give information about a subject. For example: "The men, dressed in black, were very attractive."
In order to achieve the function of describing, they must always keep concordance, which can be seen if the adjective correctly points to the core of the subject, indicating its attributes and / or characteristics.
In an adjective phrase, the main word is always the adjective. You should always aim to provide details or complement the noun. Its structure is as follows:
- Core of the phrase.
- Complements of adjectives and adverbs.
Depending on the modification made to the subject and the verb that is within the sentence, we can classify it as: qualifying, demonstrative, possessive and indefinite.
Types of adjective phrases
Qualifying
They always seek to describe the subject:
- The car is yellow.
- The shoes are green.
- The backpack is huge.
- The rehearsal was entertaining.
- The girl is very calm.
Possessives
They give a sense of possession or belonging:
- These rugs are yours.
- A daughter of mine built it.
- Your sister put her car up for sale.
- These snails are hers.
- The boss broke his glasses.
Demonstrative
They denote some location, address, or signal made on a subject.
- That horse is a thoroughbred.
- Those guys are very polite.
- I like this chair more than this one.
- These oranges are very acidic.
Undefined
As long as they indicate an amount that is not specific, they will fall into this category:
- I have very little money.
- The rest of the students will be late.
- I have enough hours to finish the job.
- There is very little information about it.
