The flora and fauna of Tamaulipas is conditioned by the dry, humid and semi-warm climate that it presents. In the flora species such as mesquite, huizache and beef jerky stand out. And in the fauna, the onca panther, the puma concolor and the parrot, among others, stand out.
The state of Tamaulipas has four types of vegetation: tropical forest, mountain mesophilic forest, oak forests and xerophilous scrub.

1- Mezquite
Its name comes from the Nahuatl language. It measures between 6 and 9 meters in height. It belongs to the legume family and its flowering is yellow.
2- Huizache
It belongs to the acacia family. It is a thorny shrub 2 meters high.
Its flowers are yellow, glomeruli type, and are 5 millimeters long. Its flowering appears in groups of 2 or 3 units.
3- Anacahuita
The anacahuita or cordia boissieri is also known as the wild olive tree. Its flowering occurs between spring and summer.
Its flowers are white with a yellow interior. They belong to the boraginaceae family.
4- Ash
Also known as chenopodium album, its flowers are very small and have five purple petals.
It belongs to the Chenopodiaceae family. It grows upright and tends to warp after flowering.
5- Tasajillo
This cactaceae-type plant has a small bloom, usually yellow and green, although flowers of various shades have also been observed.
They can tolerate temperatures from -5 to 40 ºC.
The 5 main animals of Tamaulipas
1- Panther onca
The panther onca or jaguar is the largest feline in America. Its natural habitat was located in the wooded areas of Tamaulipas.
The few species that are still conserved in America are in a critical state of threat by extinction.
With its powerful bite it chose large prey or turtles that it could pierce without problem.
2- Puma concolor
The puma concolor shared the forested territory of Tamaulipas together with jaguars since ancient times. Their main prey were deer, also abundant in the area.
Their average weight is 75 kilograms, although they can weigh up to 120 kilograms. Its fur color is brown and its head is round with erect ears.
3- Tlacuache
It is an endemic marsupial that eats insects and even some small birds. He has five fingers on his hands and feet that he uses with great skill.
Its tail is used to hold onto branches or climb. Its color is white with black sections.
4- Tamaulian turtle
Also called a parrot tortoise, it weighs about 40 kilograms and is the smallest of the sea turtles.
They are in danger of extinction. Their favorite food is crabs and their favorite area to incubate their eggs is on the coasts of Tamaulipas.
5- Parrots
They measure 33 centimeters, their plumage is green with yellow, red, blue and white details on their head. They are often seen flying in packs or pairs at low altitudes.
They feed on fruits and seeds and nest in tree cavities. Its reproduction is in the month of March.
It is estimated that there are only just under two thousand specimens in freedom.
