The shield of Sonora is the representative heraldic symbol for its population. It highlights strong aspects of the region, such as indigenous culture, mining, dance and agriculture.
This shield consists of an upper and a lower part. In the first one you can see three triangular planes with the colors of the national flag. At the bottom there are only two panels that show two animal figures: a bull and a shark.
History
On December 15, 1944, the state of Sonora adopted this shield. This had not been published in the official gazette until five days later, when it became official as the representative image of the shield of Sonora.
The person responsible for presenting it was the professor and historian Eduardo W. Villa who, in addition to this, gave life to the work created by the cartoonist Francisco Castillo Blanco.
In the first place, a shield design had been made for Sonora, which was painted in the building of the Federal Public Education Secretariat.
This was done by Diego Rivera through an investigation of the region, but it was not taken as the official one.

Finally Sonora legalized the shield presented by Villa, as part of its regional heraldic symbol. This was done officially under Decree No. 71.
Meaning
The upper part, due to its colors, symbolizes its belonging to the Mexican nation. The pick and shovel located on the left side represents the mining wealth of the region.
In the upper central field, and with a white background, there is a man dancing with the deer. This is due to a typical dance from the north of the country.
In the upper right part there are three golden ears, tied and superimposed by a sickle. This represents the agriculture of the region, this being one of the main economic activities of Sonora.
In the lower part of the shield you can see two equilateral fragmentations, which show in a certain way the symmetry of the piece. Both parts are yellow.
The left area has a bull's head, and represents livestock, one of the main economic activities of the state.
Finally, in the lower right corner there is a shark superimposed on the map of Tiburon Island. This denotes Sonora's fishing skills.
Finally, just a few millimeters below is an inscription of membership that cites: "Escudo de Sonora."
