The prayers alone and only, without tilde tilde, have always been given to many confusions. The diacritical accent, which differentiates the adverb (only) from the adjective (only), has also been the subject of some controversy.
The diacritical tilde is used to differentiate two words that are written in the same way, as long as one is stressed and the other unstressed. However, in the case of single and only, this check mark is not justified.
This situation has led the institution that ensures the convenient and universal use of the elements of Spanish, the Royal Spanish Academy, since 2010 has recommended their elimination.
In addition, the Academy also proposes that any possible ambiguities that may arise be resolved thanks to the context, the use of synonyms, the appropriate punctuation or with the inclusion of some other linguistic element.
However, due to many years of use, this accent is deeply ingrained in Spanish speakers.
So, as its use is not prohibited and it is not a norm but a recommendation, writers and Spanish-speakers continue to use it.
Examples of sentences with only and only
- Only as an adverb
The diacritical tilde is used when it works as an adverb of mode, and it can be identified because it can be replaced with the synonym only or only.
This accent is placed despite the general rules of accentuation indicating that grave words ending in -n, -so vowel should not be stressed.
In the case that the accent is not used and there is some ambiguity, the use of its synonyms is recommended.
Examples
- Only as an adjective
When it works as an adjective, it is only synonymous with one of a kind, without company or without protection.
Unlike its adverbial function, it must correspond in gender and number with a noun.
